For Cars first registered on or after 1 March 2001….

The banding system for Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), based on the CO₂ output of the car, only applies to cars first registered on or after 1 March 2001. 

Please note however that this database is updated regularly and will only show brand new cars, i.e. those car models that are currently available for sale in showrooms.  It is not possible to use these search options for older cars, although historic data from 2001 is available in our downloads area.

For Cars first registered before 1 March 2001.

If your car was first registered prior to 1 March 2001, the Vehicle Excise Duty you will pay will depend on the cars engine size.
